Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.2 in). The Yellow-shouldered Grosbeak has a yellow back and undertail coverts. The head and underparts are gray. It has a black mask through the eye and red iris. The bill is thick and slightly decurved. Both sexes are similar but the male has a better-defined mask. It forages in the forest canopy and sub-canopy. The Yellow-shouldered Grosbeak is unmistakable in its range but see Buff-throated Saltator.

Status: The Yellow-shouldered Grosbeak is rare and widespread in Amazonia. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Picogrueso de Hombro Amarillo.

Sub-species: Yellow-shouldered Grosbeak (Parkerthraustes humeralis), (Lawrence), 1867.

Meaning of Name: Parkerthraustes: In honor of Theodore ‘Ted’ Albert Parker III (1953-1993) US field ornithologist. humeralis: L. umerus= shoulders, humeralis of the shoulders.
