Identification & Behavior: ~15.5 cm (6.1 in). The Parker’s Spinetail has rufous upperparts, tail, and crown. The underparts are rufous brown with a whitish throat. The sides of the head and breast are faintly streaked with whitish. It forages in pairs in early vegetative stages of river islands and river created habitats. The very similar Rusty-backed Spinetail is rare and restricted the understory of flooded forests and overhanging vegetation at the edges of lakes or slow-flowing creeks. Status: The Parker’s Spinetail is uncommon along major Amazonian rivers in Loreto. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Cola-Espina de Parker.
Sub-species: Parker’s Spinetail (Cranioleuca vulpecula), P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1866.
Meaning of Name: Cranioleuca: Gr. kranion= skull, head and leukos= white. vulpecula: L. vulpes, vulpis= fox. Vulpecula= little fox.
