Identification & Behavior: ~11.5 cm (4.5 in). The male Band-tailed Antbird is gray with a black throat. The wing coverts are black with white wing bars. The tail is blackish with a broad white terminal band. The female is similar but lacks the black throat and has a whitish center of the belly. It forages near or on the ground along thickets and vegetation that overhang on water. It is very similar to the Black-chinned Antbird but these two antbirds replace each other geographically.
Status: The Band-tailed Antbird is fairly common on the south side of the Amazon and Marañon Rivers. It also occurs in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Hormiguero de Cola Bandeada.
Sub-species: Band-tailed Antbird (Hypocnemoides maculicauda), (Pelzeln), 1869.
Meaning of Name: Hypocnemoides: Genus Hypocnemis Cabanis, 1847, antbird and Gr. Oides; resembling. maculicauda: L. macula=spot and cauda=tail.
