Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (6.6 in). The Many-striped Canastero has heavily streaked upperparts and underparts. The forehead and chin are rufous in northern birds (flammulata). In more southern birds, the underparts are lighter in color, less heavily streaked with a plain creamy white throat (taczanowskii). It forages in humid scrub and shrubs interspersed with bunch grass. It is very similar to the Junin Canastero but these two canasteros replace each other geographically.

Status: The Many-striped Canastero is uncommon at high elevation in the northern half of Peru. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Canastero Multilistado.

Meaning of Name: Asthenes: Gr. a= a negative prefix and sthenos= power. asthenes= insignificant, powerless. flammulata: L. flamma= flame, lagrare= to burn. Flammulatus, flammulated= with flame-like markings, ruddy.
