Identification & Behavior: ~19.5 cm (7.7 in). The Dunlin in basic plumage is gray to brownish-gray with a pale belly. It has a pale superciliary line and long dropping bill. The alternate plumage is gray with reddish back and a large black patch on the belly. See Curlew Sandpiper.

Status: The Dunlin is known in Peru from only sight records from Paracas Peninsula. It also occurs in Ec.

Name in Spanish: Playero de Vientre Negro.

Sub-species: Dunlin (Calidris alpina pacifica), Coues 1861.

Meaning of Name: Calidris: Gr. kalidris, skalidris= shorebird the color of ash mentioned by Aristotle. alpina: alpinus, Alps= reference to high mountains.
