Identification & Behavior: ~58 cm (23 in). The Toco Toucan is all black with white breast, throat, cheeks, and rump. It has red on the undertail coverts. The bill is orange with shades of reddish and a large black patch near the tip. It has orange bare skin around the eyes. Similar to White-throated Toucan and Channel-billed Toucan, but is distinguished by different bill color and by using open habitats and gallery forest.
Status: In Peru, the Toco Toucan es restricted to the open habitats and gallery forest of Pampas del Heath. All sight record come from this region of extreme southeast Peru where it appears to be rare. It also occurs in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Tucán Toco.
Sub-species: Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco albogularis), Cabanis 1862.
Meaning of Name: Ramphastos: Gr. ramphestes= long sword, great sword. toco: Tupi= bone of the nose.
