Identification & Behavior: ~47 cm (18.5 in). The adult White-tailed Hawk has a gray head and rest of the upperpats. The underparts are white with fine dusky barring on the belly and clean white breast (usually). The juvenile is dusky with an irregular white patch on the breast. The adult is similar to a female Variable Hawk, but the rufous is restricted only to the shoulders or wing coverts rather than the entire back in Variable Hawk. These two species are not known to overlap. The White-tailed Hawk has also a dark morph, which is very rare.

Status: The White-tailed Hawk is rare and local. It is known to occur in the Marañon Valley, in parts of Junin, and Pampas del Heath in extreme southeast Peru. It also occurs in Co, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Aguilucho de Cola Blanca.

Sub-species: White-tailed Hawk (Geranoaetus albicaudatus albicaudatus), Vieillot 1816.

Meaning of Name: Geranoaetus: Gr. geranos crane, crane and aetos= eagle. albicaudatus: L. albus= white and caudatus= tail.
