Identification & Behavior: ~18 cm (7 in). The Red-hooded Tanager is yellowish and gray above and bright yellow below. It has a bright red hood, which extends to the breast in the male. The Red-hooded Tanager forages in the canopy and sub-canopy of the humid montane forest often in pairs or family groups. The combination of a red hood and yellow belly is unmistakable but see Bay-headed Tanager, which ranges at lower elevations.

Status: The Red-hooded Tanager is uncommon to rare in humid montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 1800-3000 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Piranga de Capucho Rojo.

Sub-species: Red-hooded Tanager (Piranga rubriceps), (G. R. Gray), 1844.

Meaning of Name: Piranga: Güaraní name Pirangá red (bird), for a small bird, a finch or a
tanager. rubriceps: L. ruber, rubra= red and ceps= headed, head.
