Identification & Behavior: ~20.5 cm (8 in). The Chestnut-naped Antpitta has olive/rufous back and chestnut cap and nape. The throat is dusky with the rest of underparts gray. It appears to be associated with bamboo thickets. The only other large antpitta with uniform gray underparts is Pale-Billed Antpitta, which has a pale bill and dusky head. These two antpittas are not known to overlap.

Status: The Chestnut-naped Antpitta is fairly common in the humind montane forests of extreme northeast Peru where it is found only on the north and west side of the Marañon River. It ranges at elevations between 2200 – 3000 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Tororoi de Nuca Castaña.

Sub-species: Chestnut-naped Antpitta (Grallaria nuchalis nuchalis) P. L. Sclater, 1859.

Meaning of Name: Grallaria: L. grallarius, grallae= one walking on stilts. nuchalis: L. nuchal, nuchalis= of the nape.
