Identification & Behavior: ~18.8 cm (7.4 in). The Black-streaked Puffbird has a heavily streaked head and underparts.  It shows a variable amount of rufous in the chin and throat. The back is brown with fine pale streaks. Distinguished from the similar  White-chested Puffbird and Semi-collared Puffbird by having rufous on the chin and throat. The Black-streaked Puffbird can be considered the Andean counterpart of the two latter puffbirds.

Status: The Black-streaked Puffbird is rare in montane forest on the eastern side of the Andes at elevations ranging from 900 to 1900 m. It may overlap with White-chested Puffbird and Semi-collared Puffbirds at the lower end of its altitudinal range. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Buco Listado de Negro.

Sub-species: Black-streaked Puffbird (Malacoptila fulvogularis fulvogularis) Sclater, PL, 1854.

Meaning of Name: Malacoptila: Gr. malakos= soft and ptilon= plumage, feather. fulvogularis: L. Fulvous=tawny, gularis=of the throat.
