Identification & Behavior: ~24 cm (9.4 in). The Flammulated Treehunter is mostly blackish, broadly streaked with buff on the head, mantle, and the underparts, down to the lower belly. The wings and tail are rufous. The bill is black. It forages in the thick understory of humid montane forests. It is similar to the Striped Treehunter but is distinguished by having blackish head, mantle, and underparts broadly streaked with buff, and by ranging at higher elevations. It replaces the Buff-throated Treehunter on the north side of the Marañon Valley.

Status: The Flammulated Treehunter is uncommon to rare in montane forests on the north side of the Marañon Valley on the east slope of the Andes. It ranges at elevations between 2100-2950 m. The Flammulated Treehunter also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Trepamusgo Flamulado.

Sub-species: Flammulated Treehunter (Thripadectes flammulatus flammulatus), (Eyton), 1849.

Meaning of Name: Thripadectes: Gr. thrips, thripos= woodworm and dektes, dakno= biter, to bite. flammulatus: L. flammula= little flame, flagrare= to burn. flammulatus flammulated= with flame-like markings.
