Identification & Behavior: ~31.7 cm (12.4 in). The Peruvian Pigeon is mostly brick-red. The iris is pale. The orbital skin is red. The bill is bicolored red and gray. The tail is solid gray. It is similar to the Pale-vented Pigeon but is distinguished by having a bicolored bill, pale iris, and a solid gray tail.
Status: Endemic. The Peruvian Pigeon is uncommon to fairly common in the upper Marañon Drainage. It forages mostly along riparian forest and also agricultural fields.
Name in Spanish: Paloma Peruana.
Sub-species: Peruvian Pigeon (Patagioenas oenops), Salvin 1895.
Meaning of Name: Patagioenas: Gr. Patageö= noise, noisy and Oinas= dove. oenops: Gr. Oinos= wine. In reference to the red wine color of the Peruvian Pigeon.
