Identification & Behavior: ~25.3 cm (10 in). The White-necked Puffbird is the largest black and white puffbird. They have a broad black band that separates the white underparts. The white neck band separates the black upperparts. It is distinguished from the similar Brown-banded Puffbird and Pied Puffbird by its larger size, a black eye-stripe that runs from the beak to the crown, a more extensive white forehead, and a gray tail.

Status: The White-necked Puffbirds is widespread and generally uncommon in the canopy of Varzea and Terra Firme forests where they often perch for long periods of time on exposed branches. They range up to 700 m of elevation along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Buco de Cuello Blanco.

Sub-species: White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus hyperrhynchus) Sclater, PL, 1856.

Meaning of Name: Notharchus: Gr. nöthës = slow, sleepy, lazy; and arkhos= leader, chief. hyperrhynchus: Gr.  huper= very large, one that exceeds measures; and rhunkhos= bill.
