Identification & Behavior: ~36 cm (14 in). The Taczanowski’s Tinamou has gray neck and rest of underparts. The back is dusky with an intricate pattern in shades of gray and brown. The large size, darker appearance, and thick black bill distinguish the Taczanowski’s Tinamou from other Nothroprocta tinamous. It is not likely to overlap with other Nothoprocta Tinamous, but see Ornate Tinamou and Andean Tinamou.

Status: The Taczanowski’s Tinamou is uncommon to rare on a relatively restricted range between 2800-4000 m on the east slope of the Andes. It appears to favor wet grasslands, but can also be found in drier grasslands and agricultural field adjacent to grasslands. It also occurs in Bo.

Name in Spanish: Perdiz de Taczanowski.

Sub-species: Taczanowski’s Tinamou (Nothoprocta taczanowskii), P. L. Sclater and Salvin 1875.

Meaning of Name: Nothoprocta: Gr. Nothos= false, spurious and proktos= the tail. In reference to a short tail. taczanowskii: In honor of Wladyslaw Taczanowski (1819-1890) Polish ornithologist and author of (Ornithologie du Perou, 1984).
