Identification & Behavior: ~28 cm (11 in) (male), 23 cm (9 in) (female). The Scarlet-rumped Cacique is solid black with a bright red rump. The iris is sky blue. The bill is pale yellowish. The tail and upper and undertail coverts are solid black. It is very similar to the Red-rumped Cacique but is distinguished by ranging at higher elevation on the east slope of the Andes, and a smaller size. The Scarlet-rumped Cacique forages in the canopy of montane forests.

Status: The Scarlet-rumped is uncommon in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 900-2000 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Cacique de Lomo Escarlata.

Sub-species: Scarlet-rumped Cacique (Cacicus uropygialis uropygialis), Lafresnaye, 1843.

Meaning of Name: Cacicus: Spanish Caique= Indian Chief. uropygialis: L. uropygium= rump.
