Identification & Behavior: ~20 cm (7.8 in). The Peruvian Recurvebill is mostly reddish-brown. The throat, upper breast, and sides of the neck are streaked with rufous. The bill is pale and thick with an upturned mandible. It is nearly exclusively associated with stands of Guadua bamboo where it is found alone or in pairs. The bill shape and color are diagnostic and distinctive from the also bamboo-associated Brown-rumped Foliage-Gleaner and Dusky-cheeked Foliage-Gleaner.  

Status: The Peruvian Recurvebill is overall rare and local in southeastern Peru where it is known to range to elevations of up to 1300 m on the east slope of the Andes. It also occurs in Bo and Br.

Name in Spanish: Pico-Recurvo Peruano.

Sub-species: Peruvian Recurvebill (Syndactyla ucayalae), (Chapman), 1928.

Meaning of Name: Syndactyla: Gr. sun= together and daktulos= toe. ucayalae: Originating from or associated with the Río Ucayali, Peru.
