Identification & Behavior: ~29 cm (11.4 in). The Purple-throated Fruitcrow is all black with a bluish-gray bill. The male has a broad patch of purple on the neck. If forages in the canopy of the mostly floodplain forest in pairs of family groups. The crow-like looking is unmistakable but see a female Bare-necked Fruitcrow and female Amazonian Umbrellabird.
Status: The Purple-throated Fruitcrow is uncommon and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Cuervo-Frutero de Garganta Púrpura.
Sub-species: Purple-throated Fruitcrow (Querula purpurata), (Statius Müller), 1776.
Meaning of Name: Querula: L. querulous, queri= noisy, plaintive, to lament, to complain. purpurata: L. purpuratus= clad in purple.
