Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (6.7 in). The Peruvian Pygmy-Owl has rufous, gray, and brown color morphs. The head is streaked or spotted in the adult. The breast can be rufous, gray, or brown with streaks down the belly. The pattern of streaks and spots on the upperparts appear to vary with the color morph. The iris is yellow. It is the only pygmy-owl in its range. It favors drier habitats than the Andean Pygmy-Owl. The range of the Peruvian Pygmy-Owl is not known to overlap with the range of other Pygmy-Owl.

Status: The Peruvian Pygmy-Owl is common in the western lowlands, the Marañon Drainage, and some inter-Andean valleys. Its broad elevational range includes sea level to 3300 m. It also occurs in Ec and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Lechucita Peruana.

Sub-species: Peruvian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium peruanum). C. König, 1991.

Meaning of Name: Glaucidium: Gr. glaukidion= diminutive of Glaux= little owl, little owl. peruanum: Originating from the country of Peru in South America.
