Identification & Behavior: ~20 cm (7.9 in). The Black-bellied Storm-Petrel has white underparts, underwing lining, and rump. The rest of the body is dusky with shades of black. It is very similar to White-bellied Storm-Petrel, but is distinguished by a blackish line extending down the center of belly to connect the blackish undertail coverts. Flies very low over water dangling its feet on the water. It has a stocky appearance.
Status: Known from only one specimen collected in the ocean of Central Peru. Apparently, no additional sight records exist. It also occurs in Br and Ch.
Name in Spanish: Golondrina de Mar de Vientre Negro.
Sub-species: Black-bellied Storm-Petrel (Fregetta tropica tropica), Gould 1844.
Meaning of Name: Fregetta: Specific name given to this genus of storm-petrel. tropica: Gr. Tropikos, tropical, of the Tropics.
