Identification & Behavior: ~34.5 cm (13.5 in). The Yellow-crowned Parrot has a yellow crown of variable sizes. The bill is dusky with reddish spots on the sides of the culmen. The outer third of the primary flight feathers are blue. It shows red areas on the wings and the shoulders. The tail is square and green with a broad terminal yellowish band. It is similar to the Mealy Parrot but is distinguished by the yellow crown, greener color, smaller size, and thinner fleshy orbital skin. Also, see Orange-winged Parrot.
Status: The Yellow-crowned Parrot is uncommon and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 800 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Loro de Corona Amarilla.
Sub-species: Yellow-crowned Parrot (Amazona ochrocephala nattereri), Finsch, 1865.
Meaning of Name: Amazona: Fr. In reference or originating in the Amazon River on the Amazon Forest. ochrocephala: Gr. ökhros= pale yellow, ocher and kephale= head.
