Identification & Behavior: ~20 cm (8 in). The Gray-cheeked Parakeet has a powdery blue top of the head and pale gray cheeks, neck and throat. It has bright orange underwing coverts visible in flight. It is often seen in small flocks in the humid and semi-deciduous forest in extreme northwest Peru. Its plumage and appearance are unique in its range but see Pacific Parrotlet.

Status: The Gray-cheeked Parakeet is uncommon to fairly common in most of its range in extreme northwest Peru. It is heavily trapped for the pet trade and its populations continue to decline. It also occurs in Ec.

Name in Spanish: Perico de Mejilla Gris.

Sub-species: Gray-cheeked Parakeet (Brotogeris pyrrhoptera), Latham, 1801.

Meaning of Name: Brotogeris: Gr. Brotogërus= with a human voice. pyrrhoptera: Gr. Purrhos= flame-colored, red and pteros= winged.
