Identification & Behavior: ~25 cm (10 in). The Killdeer has brown upperparts and head. The neck, forehead, and all underparts are white. It has two complete black breast bands. The rump and base of the tail are orange. The tail feathers have white tips. It is the only plover with two complete breast bands, but see Wilson’s Plover and Semipalmated Plover.
Status: The Killdeer is common along the western lowlands of Peru. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Ch.
Name in Spanish: Chorlo Gritón.
Sub-species: Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus peruvianus), Chapman 1920.
Meaning of Name: Charadrius = A yellowish bird mentioned in the Vulgate Bible. vociferus: L. clamorous, vociferous.
