Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.3 in). The Swallow-wing is dark slate-colored with shades of black, rufous lower belly and white vent area and back. Perches on exposed branches from where they perform aerial hawks on passing prey. It has a distinctive shape in flight characterized by broad wings and a short tail.
Status: The Swallow wing is common in the Amazonian lowlands below 1000 m. It is regularly found perched on bare branches above the canopy and also in forest edges. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Buco Golondrina.
Sub-species: Swallow wing (Chelidoptera tenebrosa tenebrosa) Pallas, 1782.
Meaning of Name: Chelidoptera: Gr. Khelidön= swallow, ptera, pterux= wings, wing. tenebrosa: L. tenebrosus, tenebrare= dark.
