Identification & Behavior: ~19 cm (7.5 in). The Collared Puffbird is rich brown in the head and upperparts. The underparts are pale with shades of buff and a conspicuous solid black breast band. Large orange and black bill.  The Collared Puffbird is unmistakable, but see Chestnut-capped Puffbirds and Spotted Puffbird.

Status: The Collared Puffbird is generally rare and locally uncommon in the mid-canopy of Terra Firme and to lesser extend tall and infrequently flooded Varzea Forest. Perhaps overlooked due to its habit of remaining motionless for extended periods of time. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Buco Acollarado.

Sub-species: Collared Puffbird (Bucco capensis) Linnaeus, 1766.

Meaning of Name: Bucco: L. bucca= cheek. capensis= referring to Cape of Good Hope region in South Africa. This was apparently an error in labeling. The name for this species of Bucco was supposed to be cayanensis instead.
