Identification & Behavior: ~18 cm (7 in). The male Purple-breasted cotinga has deep blue upperparts. The throat and rest of the underparts are deep purple. The female is brown overall with bold black scales on the underparts. It forages in the canopy of the forest with nutrient-poor soils. It is similar to the Plum-throated Cotinga and the Spangled Cotinga but is distinguished by bright deep purple underparts. The Female has bold scales and looks darker.
Status: The Purple-throated Cotinga is rare in a small region in northern Peru with forests with predominantly poor soils. It also occurs in Co and Br.
