Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.2 in). The Black-goggled Tanager has dusky wings and tail with an olive-gray mantle and head. The underparts are yellowish-brown with a dull yellowish throat. Only the male has a variable amount of black on the sides of the head through the eye, and a bright yellow crest. It forages in the mid and understory of humid montane forests. Generally in pairs and seldom in mixed spcies flocks. The Black-eared Hemispingus also has black on the sides of the head through the eye, but has a rufous belly.
Status: The Black-goggled Tanager is uncommon in forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 900-1900 m. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Sub-species: Black-goggled Tanager (Trichothraupis melanops), (Vieillot), 1818.
Meaning of Name: Trichothraupis: Gr. thrix, trikhos= hair and genus Thraupis, Boie, 1826, tanager. melanops: Gr. melas, melanos= black and ops, opos= face.
