Identification & Behavior: ~22 cm (8.6 in). The Rose-fronted Parakeet has a red-rose head. The neck and upper breast area are dusky with whitish scaling. The bill is black. The tail and central belly area are red. The wings are blue. The juvenile has a reddish forehead and a dusky rest of the head. The red-rose head in adults is distinctive. The juvenile may resemble a Wavy-breasted Parakeet or a Bonaparte’s Parakeet, but lacks the pale ears.

Status: The Rose-fronted Parakeet is fairly common on the south side of the Amazon River and east side of the Ucayali River. It is known to range up to 1500 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Perico de Frente Rosada.

Sub-species: Rose-fronted Parakeet (Pyrrhura roseifrons peruviana), Hocking, Blake, and Joseph, 2002.
(P. r. parvifrons), Arndt, 2008. Two disjunct regions in northern Peru: in eastern San Martín and adjacent west-central Loreto, and along the Amazon in northeastern Loreto (only on the south bank of the Amazon?).
(P.a r. roseifrons) G. R. Gray, 1859. Western Amazonia, south of the Amazon, from northern Peru south to northern Bolivia (La Paz) and in western Brazil (western Amazonas).
(P.a r. dilutissima), Arndt, 2008. C Peru around R Ene at confluence with R Quipachiari, and around Luisiana, in Cordillera Vilcabamba.

Meaning of Name: Pyrrhura: Gr. purhos= flame colored, red. Ouros= tailed. roseifrons: L. roseus= rosy, pink and frons= forehead.
