Identification & Behavior: ~11 cm (4.3 in). The Rufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant is uniformly olive-brown with a rufous head and rufous folded wing. The center of the belly is yellowish. The iris is dark and the bill black. It forages in the understory of humid montane forests where it is generally inconspicuous. The juvenile does not have a rufous head and wings and is very similar to both the Bronze-olive Pygmy-Tyrant and the Hazel-fronted Pygmy-Tyrant, but ranges at higher elevations and may only have limited overlap.

Status: The Rufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant is uncommon in the understory of humid montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 2000-3350 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Tirano-Pigmeo de Cabeza Rufa.

Sub-species: Rufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant (Pseudotriccus ruficeps), (Lafresnaye), 1843.

Meaning of Name: Pseudotriccus: Gr. pseudos= false and trikkos= unknown small bird. ruficeps: L. rufus= red, ruddy and ceps= headed.
