Identification & Behavior: ~70 cm (27.5 in). The Pinnated Bittern is mostly brown or buff with a diverse mix of streaking and barring. It shows a pale streak running down the front of the neck. The back is darker than the rest of the body. It is similar to Rufescent Tiger-Heron and Fasciated Tiger-Heron, but, much lighter in overall coloration. It forages in open marshes and similar vegetation along Rivers. Unlikely to use the habitat types used by Tiger-Herons.
Status: The Pinnated Bittern has been sighted multiple times in the department of Madre de Dios were it seems to be a seasonal visitor. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Mirasol Grande.
Sub-species: Pinnated Bittern (Botaurus pinnatus pinnatus) Wagler, 1829.
