Identification & Behavior: ~42 cm 16.5 in). The Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan has a black head. The underparts and upper back are gray. The middle back and wings are bronzy with a chestnut tip of the tail. The lower rump is yellow. The undertail coverts are red. It has a multicolored bill that includes red, yellow and black. It is similar to Hooded Mountain Toucan, but it is distinguished by different bill coloration and having yellow rump. These two species have no known geographic overlap.
Status: The Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan is uncommon in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes where it is known to range between 2300 – 3500 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.
Name in Spanish: Tucan-Andino de Pecho Gris.
Sub-species: Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan (Andigena hypoglauca lateralis), Chapman 1923.
Meaning of Name: Andigena: Related to or coming from the Andean Mountains. hypoglauca: L. Hypo= under, below and glauca, glaucus= blue.
