Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.2 in). The Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet has blue around the bill and along the leading edge of the folded wing. The underwing coverts are scarlet. The bill is pale. The tail is square and purple. Forages in the canopy and sub-canopy of mature forest. It is mostly seen flying high and fast in small flocks of 2-6 birds. It is similar to the Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, but is distinguished by the blue around the bill and wings and scarlet underwing feathers.
Status: The Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet is generally rare in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Periquito de Ala Roja.
Sub-species: Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet (Touit huetii), Temminck 1830.
Meaning of Name: Touit: Tupi eté (Brazilian Indian)= small parrot, parakeet. huetii: tribute to the painter and illustrator French birds Nicolas Huet- (1770-1830).
