Identification & Behavior: ~10 cm (4 in). The male Cherrie’s Antwren has upperparts and underparts heavily streaked with black and white. The tail is black with a poorly defined white terminal band. The female has the head and underparts streaked with rufous and black. It forages in scrub-like vegetation that grows in semi or permanently flooded areas along creeks and lakes. It is similar to the Stripe-Chested Antwren and but is distinguished by being more densely streaked overall, by having a shorter tail, and by vocalization.

Status: The Cherrie’s Antwren is fairly common but restricted to a very small area north along the Rio Tigre, North of the Amazon River. It also occurs in Co and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Hormiguerito de Cherrie.

Sub-species: Cherrie’s Antwren (Myrmotherula cherriei) Berlepsch and Hartert, 1902.

Meaning of Name: Myrmotherula: Gr. Combination word myrmothera= a genus (Velliot,1916, antpitta) Myrmotherula= diminutive of Myrmothera. cherriei: In honor of George Kruck Cherrie (1865-1948) US field ornithologist, collector, adventurer.
