Identification & Behavior: ~12 cm (5 in). The Spot-throated Hummingbird is green above and gray below with greenish on the sides of the breast and belly. It has dusky spots on the throat and upper breast. The tail is greenish on the upper side and gray on the underside. The bill is slightly decurved and black.  It is very similar to the smaller Tumbes Hummingbird but is distinguished by greenish sides of the breast and belly, dusky specks on the throat, a larger size, no dusky band on the tail or white tail tips, and by ranging at higher elevations.

Status: The Spot-throated Hummingbird is fairly common on the west slope of the northern Andes at elevations ranging between 900-1900 m.  It also occurs in Ec.

Name in Spanish: Colibrí de Taczanowski .

Sub-species: Spot-throated Hummingbird (Thaumasius taczanowskii), P. L. Sclater, 1879.

Meaning of Name: Thaumasius: Gr. Thaumasios= marvellous, wonderful. baeri: In honor of Gustave Adolphe Baer (1839-1918) French natural history dealer, collector in Peru, Chile and Brazil.

Formerly known as Leucipus taczanowskii (2019).
