Identification & Behavior: ~19 cm (7.4 in). The male Peruvian Plantcutter is all gray with chestnut on the belly, vent, and undertail coverts. It has a white shoulder band and wing bar. The female is heavily streaked with black on the upperparts and underparts. Both sexes have a pale yellow iris and a bushy crest. The male superficially resembles a Cinereous Finch.

Status: Endemic. The Peruvian Plantcutter is uncommon to rare throughout its range. It forages in arid semi-open woodlands and scrub in the northwestern lowlands.

Sub-species: Peruvian Plantcutter (Phytotoma raimondii), Taczanowski, 1883.

Meaning of Name: Phytotoma: Gr. phuton, phuo= plant, to grow and tomos, temno= cutting, to cut.
raimondii: Antonio Raimondi (1826-1890) Italian naturalist, explorer resident in Peru 1850-1890.
