Identification & Behavior: ~16.5 cm (6.5 in). The White-bellied Antpitta has dark chestnut back and head. The throat is white grading to grayish towards the rest of the underparts.  The similar White-throated Antpitta is restricted to southern Peru. Also, see Rusty-tinged Antpitta. There is no known range overlap between these three antpittas.

Status: The White-bellied Antpitta is fairly common in the humid montane forest of extreme northeast Peru where it is found only on the north and west side of the Marañon River. It ranges at elevations between 1700 – 2100 m. It also occurs in Co, an Ec, Br.

Name in Spanish: Tororoi de Vientre Blanco.

Sub-species: White-bellied Antpitta (Grallaria hypoleuca castanea) Chapman, 1923.

Meaning of Name: Grallaria: L. grallarius, grallae= one walking on stilts. hypoleuca: L. Hupo= beneath and leukos= white.
