Identification & Behavior: ~30 cm (12 in). The Imperial Snipe is rich-brown with a pale belly. It has black barring throughout the entire body. It is secretive and difficult to see unless is flushed or seen flying at dusk. It is similar to Andean Snipe but is distinguished by being uniformly richer brown.
Status: The Imperial Snipe is rare and apparently local at elevations ranging between 2750-3500 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.
Name in Spanish: Becasina Imperial.
Sub-species: Imperial Snipe (Gallinago imperialis), P. L. Sclater and Salvin 1869.
Meaning of Name: Gallinago= L. Galli=hen chicken and ago= similar. imperialis: in reference to a large sized and splendid plumaged bird.
