Identification & Behavior: ~8 cm (3.1 in).  The male and female Butterfly Coquette are green above with a white band across the rump. The male has an iridescent green forehead, face, and cheeks with long ornate feathers tipped with white.  The underparts are grayish-green. The tail and rump are brown. The female has gray-brown underparts with a broad pale malar streak. The female is similar to the female Black-bellied Thorntail but is distinguished by having solid gray-brown underparts

Status: The Butterfly Coquette is rare in the canopy and mid-canopy of forest in Amazonia. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Coqueta Mariposa.

Sub-species: Butterfly Coquette (Lophornis verreauxii), Bourcier, 1853.

Meaning of Name: Lophornis: Gr. Lophos= crest, tuft and ornis= bird. verreauxii: In honor of the French naturalists and collectors Edouard Verreaux (1810-1868) and Jules Pierre Verreaux (1808-1873).
