Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.2 in). The Cinereous-breasted Spinetail has a brown mantle and rufous crown. The folded wing is rufous. The tail is gray. The throat is black bordered by gray, which extends to the breast and belly. It forages in tall grass mixed with scrub and shrubbery. It is similar to the Dark-breasted Spinetail but is distinguished by having a blackish throat. The voice is essential in identifying these spinetails.

Status: The Cinereous-breasted Spinetail is uncommon to rare but very local elevations ranging between 1000-1800 m. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Cola-Espina de Pecho Cinéreo.

Sub-species: Cinereous-breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis hypospodia), P. L. Sclater, 1874.

Meaning of Name: Synallaxis: Gr. sunallaxeos, sunallaxis = exchange. hypospodia: Gr. hupo= beneath and spodios, spodos= ashes, ash-coloured.
