Identification & Behavior: ~14.5 cm (5.7 in). The Southern Scrub-Flycatcher has gray upperparts and gray crown with a bushy round crest. The throat breast and gray. The belly is yellow. It has two whitish wing bars. The tail is relatively long. The bill is black, short, and stubby. It forages in second growth. It is similar to the Amazonian Scrub Flycatcher but has more saturated colors and whitish wing bars.

Status: The Southern Scrub-Flycatcher is known to occur in parts of the Urubamba Valley where it is resident. It also occurs as an Austral migrant in southern Amazonia where it ranges up to 1000 m on the east slope of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Br, and Bo.

Sub-species: Southern Scrub-Flycatcher (Sublegatus modestus modestus) (Wied), 1831.  C Peru (Urubamba Valley) and N Bolivia E through S Brazil (E to Maranhão, Pernambuco, and Paraná).
(Sublegatus modestus brevirostris), (d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye), 1837.  breeds S Bolivia and Paraguay S to N Argentina (S to Buenos Aires and Mendoza) and E to Uruguay; regular non-breeding visitor N to E Peru and C Amazonia.

Meaning of Name: Sublegatus: L. sub near to and legatus= Genus of a flycatcher. Similar to a Legatus. modestus: L. modestus, modest= plain, unassuming, standard.
