Identification & Behavior:~26.5 cm (10.4 in). The White-winged Potoo is mostly gray with bands of spots across the breast. The iris is yellow. The wing coverts are white forming a conspicuous white band on the folded wing. It appears to be restricted to the stunted forest growing on white sand or nutrient-poor soils. In Peru it is known to occur near Iquitos and the Tapiche River areas, in similar habitats. It shares the white wing patch with the rufous an larger Long-tailed Potoo.

Status: The White-winged Potoo is rare and rather local in Amazonia where it is known only from a few locations. It also occurs in Br.

Name in Spanish: Nictibio de Ala Blanca.

Sub-species: White-winged Potoo (Nyctibius leucopterus), Wied, 1821.

Meaning of Name: Nyctibius: Gr. Nuktos: night and bioō: to live. leucopterus:  Gr. leukos= white and pterux, pteron= with the wing, wing.
