Identification & Behavior: ~56 cm (22 in). The Capped Heron is all white with yellow neck, a distinctive black cap, and blue bare skin in the face and base of the bill. It forages along edges of rivers where it can be seen flying with typical shallow wing-beats. The Capped Heron is unmistakable by color and habitat use but see Boat-billed Heron.
Status: The Capped Heron is common along rivers in Amazonia. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Garza Pileada.
Sub-species: Capped Heron (Pilherodius pileatus) Boddaert, 1783.
Meaning of Name: Pilherodius: Gr. Pilos= hat, cap and erodios= heron. pileatus: L. pileatus, pileus= capped, covered.
