Identification & Behavior: ~17.5 cm (7 in). The Red and White Antpitta has a chestnut back, sides of neck and head. The sides of the chest, belly, and flanks are mottled with red and white. The throat and center of the belly are white. It is similar to the White-throated Antpitta, which has gray underparts. The White-throated Antpitta ranges at lower elevations than the Red and White Antpitta.
Status: Endemic. The Red-and-White Antpitta is fairly common at elevations ranging between 2100 – 3000 m in southeast Peru.
Name in Spanish: Tororoi Rojo y Blanco.
Sub-species: Red-and-white Antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca) P. L. Sclater, 1874.
Meaning of Name: Grallaria: L. grallarius, grallae= one walking on stilts. erythroleuca: Gr. Eruthro= red and leuko= white.
