Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (6.7 in). The Gray-hooded Bush-Tanager has a gray hood and upper breast. The upperparts are olive and the underparts yellow. The bill can be dusky gray (chrysogaster) or red (rubrirostris). It forages in pairs or groups along with mixed species flocks in humid montane forest. The Gray-hooded Bush-Tanager is similar to the Ashy-throated Bush-Tanager but is larger and ranges at higher elevations.

Status: The Gray-hooded Bush-Tanager is uncommon in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 2000-3200 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Tangara-Montesa de Capucha Gris.

Sub-species: Gray-hooded Bush Tanager (Cnemoscopus rubrirostris rubrirostris), (Lafresnaye), 1840. Andes of Colombia and NW & E Ecuador and Peru.
(C. r. chrysogaster), (Taczanowski), 1875.  Andes of NW & E Peru (Piura; Amazonas S to Junín); W Bolivia (near Tokoaque, in La Paz).

Meaning of Name: Cnemoscopus: Gr. Knemos= mountain-slope and skopos= searcher, watcher, skopeo= to watch out. rubrirostris: L. ruber= red and rostris= billed, rostrum =beak.
