Identification & Behavior: ~21.5 cm (8.4 in). The Black-cowled Saltator is all bluish-gray with a black head or hood. The bill is coral red and thick. It forages in scrub and semi-open deciduous forest in northern Peru. It is superficially similar to the Golden-billed Saltator, but the range of these two saltators is not known to overlap.

Status: The Black-cowled Saltator is uncommon in semi-humid and humid scrub and forests in Piura, Cajamarca, and part of Lambayeque, on the west slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 1200 -2500 m. It also occurs in Ec.

Name in Spanish: Saltador de Capucha Negra.

Sub-species: Black-cowled Saltator (Saltator nigriceps), (Chapman), 1914.

Meaning of Name: Saltator: L. saltator, saltatoris dancer, saltare= to dance. nigriceps: L. niger black and ceps= headed.
