Identification & Behavior: ~11.5 cm (4.5 in). The male Green-throated Mango is green above and mostly black below. The black area below may be difficult to distinguish from the dark green in poor light. The female is green above and white below with a black median stripe along the underparts. Both sexes have a purple tail. The female has a broad black terminal tail band. It is very similar to the closely related Black-throated Mango, which occurs only in Amazonia, east of the Andes.

Status: The Green-throated Mango is uncommon in the humid semi-deciduous forest of extreme northwest Peru in Tumbes. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Mango de Garganta Verde.

Sub-species: Green-throated Mango (Anthracothorax prevostii).

Meaning of Name: Anthracothorax: Gr. Anthrakos= coal, black or a precious stone, and thorax, thōrakos= chest. prevostii: In honor of Florent Prévost (or Prévôt) (1794-1870), French museum artist.
