Identification & Behavior: ~32 cm (12.5 in). The Dusky Piha is all gray with brownish undertail coverts. It forages in the midstory of humid montane forest in a similar fashion as other pihas or trogons; staying motionless for long periods of time before launching on insects or hanging fruit. It is similar to the Screaming Piha of Amazonia, but their ranges do not overlap.

Status: The Dusky Piha is rare in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes, on the west side of the Marañon valley, at elevations ranging between 1700-2600 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Piha Oscura.

Sub-species: Dusky Piha (Lipaugus fuscocinereus), (Lafresnaye), 1843.

Meaning of Name: Lipaugus: Gr. leipo= to abandon and auge, auges= brilliance; lipauges= dark, deserted by light. fuscocinereus: L. fuscus= dusky and cinereus= ash-colored.
