Identification & Behavior: ~14.5 cm (6 in). The Needle-billed Hermit is mainly dull brownish green above, tawny below with a scaled rump with dusky and rufous. It has a small and poorly defined dusky mask through the eye. The bill is nearly straight, with a red lower mandible. The tail is dusky greenish with broad tawny tips on each feather, except for the central pair, which is longer and tipped white. It is similar to the Koepcke’s Hermit but is distinguished by having a nearly straight bill and by ranging at lower elevations.
Status: The Needle-billed Hermit uncommon in Amazonia. It appears widespread in southern Amazonia, but more restricted to certain regions in northern Amazonia. It also occurs in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Ermitaño de Pico Aguja.
Sub-species: Needle-billed Hermit (Phaethornis philippi), Bourcier 1847.
Meaning of Name: Phaethornis: Gr. Phao= sun sunshine, and Ornis= bird. philippii: in honor of the zoologist and Italian explorer, prof. Filippo Filippi- (1814-1867).
