Identification & Behavior: ~8.5 cm (3.3 in). The male Violet-bellied Hummingbird is mostly green with a violet belly. The tail is slightly notched and dusky. The female is green above and gray below with a variable amount of green specks along the sides of the head, throat, breast, and belly. The tail is slightly notched and dusky with pale tips. The bill in both sexes is nearly straight with a black or dusky-red culmen and red mandible. Both sexes are similar to the male and female Green-crowned Woodnymph but are distinguished by a smaller size and a straight bill with a red mandible.

Status: The Violet-bellied Hummingbird is uncommon in humid forest of extreme northwest Peru in Tumbes where it ranges generally below 750 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Colibrí de Vientre Violeta.

Sub-species: Violet-bellied Hummingbird (Chlorestes julie feliciana), Lesson, 1844.

Meaning of Name: Chlorestes: Gr. khlōros= green and esthēs, esthētos= clothes, clothing. julie: In honor Anne-Julie Mulsant née de Ronchivol (1801-1868) wife of French ornithologist Martial Etienne Mulsant.

Formerly known as Damophila julie (2019).
