Identification & Behavior: ~15 cm (6 in). The Red-necked Stint in basic plumage is gray on the upperparts and white on the underparts. In alternate plumage, it has a rusty neck, mottle back, and white belly. In basic plumage, it is similar to the Semipalmated Sandpiper.

Status: The Red-necked stint is a rare vagrant species in Peru. There are only two sight records of birds in breeding plumage from the Paracas Peninsula and the Mejía Lagoons in Arequipa.

Name in Spanish: Playerito de Cuello Rojo.

Sub-species: Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis), Pallas 1776.

Meaning of Name: Calidris: Gr. kalidris, skalidris= shorebird the color of ash mentioned by Aristotle. ruficollis: L. rufous= rich brown, red and collis= neck.
