Identification & Behavior: ~27.5 cm (11 in). The Bronze-winged Parrot is mostly dark blue with a rosy mottled breast. The wings are dark brown or bronze. The bill is pale. It has a broad red orbital skin. The undertail coverts are bright red. The overall dark appearance, particularly when seen from a distance is unmistakable in its range.
Status: The Bronze-winged Parrot is uncommon to rare in the humid and semi-deciduous forest of extreme northwest Peru. It also occurs in Co and Ec.
Name in Spanish: Loro de Ala Bronceada.
Sub-species: Bronze-winged Parrot (Pionus chalcopterus), Fraser, 1841.
Meaning of Name: Pionus: Gr. Pion, pionos= bulky, fat. chalcopterus: L. khalkos= copper, bronze and pteros= winged.
